IN 1932, DAVID ALFARO SIQUEIROS SPENT SEVEN MONTHS IN LOS ANGELES. NEITHER HE NOR THE CITY WOULD EVER BE THE SAME

In 1932, David Alfaro Siqueiros spent seven months in Los Angeles on his way to becoming part of the great trinity of Mexican muralists, which also included Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco.

These months were a turning point, both for Siqueiros and for the budding Los Angeles art scene. While completing three murals here, Siqueiros explored new techniques and experimented with perspective, all the while fomenting a new artistic and political aesthetic that took root in the city but eventually resulted in his near deportation.

The Autry’s new exhibition, featuring more than 100 works and materials drawn from archives across the continent, explores this fertile period in the life and work of one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. En 1932, David Alfaro Siqueiros pasó siete meses en Los Angeles mientras se convertía en uno de los Tres Grandes muralistas mexicanos, trío que también incluía a Diego Rivera y José Clemente Orozco.

Estos meses fueron un parteaguas, tanto para Siqueiros como para la naciente comunidad artística de Los Ángeles. Mientras pintaba tres murales aquí, Siqueiros tuvo oportunidad de explorar nuevas técnicas y experimentar con la perspectiva, siempre abonando un punto de vista artístico y político que sembró raíces en la ciudad pero también resultó casi en su deportación.

La nueva exposición del Autry, que cuenta con más de 100 piezas y documentos provenientes de archivos de todo el continente, explora ésta época fértil en la vida y obra de uno de los artistas más importantes del Siglo XX.
